A day in the life of a volunteer

There are different ways of how you can contribute as a volunteer in the life of Arco Iris:

First however some basic information:

For a small contribution of 5 Euro's per day you get: Airport pick-up, accomodation within Arco Iris and 3 meals per day, you will be a full part of the family. All the basic things are taken care of, so their is no need to spend time on, or worry about this.

  • The basics for a volunteer is to assist the regular staff with the daily things that happen. As the day starts: Prepare breakfast, eat with the children, take them to school and pick them up again. Aftre school the cook has prepared lunch and everybody will have lunch together. In the afternoon there are different activities organized by Arco Iris where always help is needed, such as homework or laundry and other homelike activities.  In the evening ofcourse dinner is taken and aftre that there again is room to help the children with activities such as homework but also with the preparations for a good night of sleep.

  • Education: For those volunteers with a background or interest in education several activities can be undertaken.  In the morning 2 hours of educuational classes are being organized for children from outside. In the afternoon again 2 hours of education are organized, now however joined by the Arco Iris children. As the size of the group is much bigger and the ages vary, there is a lot of support and initiative needed.

  • Sports, health and recreation: As physical activity is deemed a very important part of the development of the children. Arco Iris has designated area's and time  in the daily program to play. Facilitation and coaching to spend this time well is not really organized so there is lots of space to organize this.

  • Kindergarden: For those children in the Kindergarden, there is a full day program. There is always need for specific support for this intens work.

More is better:

  • The children love engagement and attention and by active participation, both you and the children learn and experience so much more. In weekends, swimmingtrips, a visit to the cinema or a market trip have been organized.

  • Volunteers have organized additional English lessons, basics of knitting or other finemotor skills.

  • Volunteers have also helped in constructions, renovations, paintjobs etc.
